LET ATYP PUT THE DRAMA BACK INTO YOUR SCHOOL HOLIDAYS – IN THE BEST WAY!
As Term 1, 2015 rapidly comes to an end the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) is planning their most exciting and fun-filled holiday program yet.
New workshops, new tutors and new partners will see kids playing, learning and having more fun than ever before. New workshop manager and professional actor Robert Jago guarantee’s that there’s something for everyone!
We have devising and story-telling for our younger people with everything from secrets, to thieves and boisterous beasts!
For our participants in Years 3 – 7 we explore musical theatre, develop funky presentation skills in your own news program and explore the wonderful world of Roald Dahl. And if you’re keen to have a sing off like ATYP’s own Rebel Wilson in Pitch Perfect or want to create your own ghost story, then there’s something for you as well!” We can’t wait to see all the smiling faces, hear the fantastic ideas, and share in the celebration that is our end-of-workshop performances.
We know all our workshops are awesome but here are some highlights for different age groups:
Bugalugs Bum Thief
Today you wake up and there is a mystery to solve. Something is missing. It’s not your toys, your bike, but a part of your body! Can you believe it?! It’s not just you though; your parents, your teachers and your friends are all missing a body part too. Maybe their nose, eyes or mouth? How could this be? How will you cope? Go on a journey after seeing Monkey Baa’s performance of Tim Winton’s classic, The Bugalugs Bum Thief, to solve this riddle and perform a show for your family and friends.

After Ever After School Years 3-4
And they all lived happily ever after… or did they? Musical Theatre often investigates the world of fairy tales but let’s see what happens after the fairy tale is finished. Was the wicked witch really so bad? Is being a princess really all it’s cracked up to be? Did Jack do the right thing stealing all the Giant’s possessions? There are many questions to ponder in this week. Using the music from shows such as Wicked, Beauty and the Beast, Frozen and Into the Woods you will unlock an exciting world of magic and adventure, performing a showing for your family and friends at the end of the week.
When: 7 –10 April (4 days)
Where: The Wharf, Hickson Rd
Time: 9:30am – 3:30pm Price: $300
Don’t Just Bring it. Sing it! School Years 5-7
With the recent releases of Pitch Perfect (starring ATYP alumni Rebel Wilson), High School Musical and Glee, the genre of High School/College musical is as strong as Grease Lightning! During this workshop you will create your own mini-musical performance. The cheerleaders, the football jocks, the nerdy kids, the misfits or even the nasty teachers: who are you going to play? And what songs are you going to sing? The week will be filled with singing, dancing, acting and musical challenges. Create your own singing group, have sing-offs and at the end of the week you will perform your own show to an excited audience.
When: 7 –10 April (4 days)

To top it off we have a very exciting new course for all round theatre makers called The Complete Creative for school years 9-12. Below are just some of the excellent workshops available for our more grown up members in school years 7 – 12.

Once you have been well and truly spooked you will be ready to create your own Ghost Stories. You’ll spend the week brainstorming ideas, learning how to create tension and suspense, as well as writing and devising your own show, all to spook your family and friends at the end of the week.

Taking inspiration from ATYP’s latest show Between Us (a new work developed entirely from pieces by young writers) we will delve into the creative thinking process, put those ideas to paper, write a piece and perform it. All in 4 days! This is a great opportunity for young artists who want their voices heard and their words performed.

Jago is enthusiastic about the program. “ATYP has an amazing community where people are free to be themselves, share creative ideas and create their own work. They don’t just discover acting skills, they learn life skills, build confidence and work as an ensemble. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly a group of young people who are strangers at the beginning of the week can come together and deliver a piece of work that exceeds all expectations.” So, book early to make sure you secure a place as these exceptional workshops sell out fast.
