Ways to teach your kids about Eco-Friendliness

Ways to Teach Your Kids About Eco-FriendlinessTherefore, it’s important to set a good example early on in their growth and development which will allow them to carry those belief systems and morals they were taught with them through to adulthood.

Being environmentally conscious is something each and every parent must teach their kids, as the world we live in is slowly but surely being destroyed by our actions. In order to begin fostering an appreciation for living an eco-friendly lifestyle inside and outside of your home, the following tips will be a step in the right direction:

1. Nurturing a Garden (Fruit, Vegetable or even a Herb)

Ask any toddler what they love to do most and the answer you’ll most probably receive is that they love to play outside in the mud and get dirty. Why not use their favourite past time as a way for them to learn more about the outdoors. You can do this by teaching them the name of plants, insects and flowers they come across and show them how to tend to a garden, how to water plants and how to look after their growing fruits, veggies or herbs.

Growing a patch of their own is a wonderful way to teach them about sustainable and organic living. The amount of self-satisfaction a child will get by watching their little bulb or seedling grow into a fully grown plant is priceless.

There are many miniature gardening kits available that will provide all the tools necessary to begin an activity such as this.

2.Recycling and Reusing

The various bins we use in order to sort our rubbish out are a great way to get the kids involved with recycling. The various colours for each product of waste allow them to understand which products can be recycled and which can’t. Such a responsibility teaches them that not recycling properly has a very negative impact on the world at large.

Many things and possessions of your children can be reused in and around the home. Empty bottles, toilet paper rolls and even cans of cool drinks can be prettied up with some arts and crafts to be used as storage bottles etc.

This reusing system can also be applied to old toys and clothes as well. What a waste it is to throw old things that can still be enjoyed by others away. Teach your kids to give away their old stuff to charity organisations or even arrange a swap between their friend whereby their toys and clothes may be swapped for a week or two. Such actions will teach the child about the value of appreciation and sharing, so as not to waste just for the sake of it.

3. Let Them Interact With Animals

Its long been understood the therapeutic effects animals have on a humans well-being, as such allow your kids to interact with animals such as visiting a petting farm or wildlife sanctuary if you have no pets at home. Let them learn to love and develop respect for animals, which will have them develop compassion and value about the plight of animals.

It’s also imperative you teach them about endangered animal species that are on the verge of becoming extinct. They must understand the value of life to comprehend what it means to have an animal become extinct. Let them become part of organisations working to support and keep the animal kingdom alive and well, through this interaction they will learn the importance of doing so.

4. Renewable Energy

The sun is one of the most important sources of energy which is being utilised by people around the globe to meet their power demands. Solar power has many benefits such as reducing fossil fuel sources as well as GHG emissions.

Though the intricacies of how solar panels work etc. may be difficult for younger kids to appreciate and understand, it’s still important for you to teach them from a young age the many benefits that solar has on the world at large. These benefits include:

• Easy availability
• Every living organism needs solar energy for nourishment
• Solar energy is an alternate power source that is much easier on the Earth as opposed to those utilising fossil fuels
• Solar power aids in cost savings, its long-lasting, helps with increasing health as well as with environmental conservation
• There are multiple uses for solar such as heating homes, pools and generating electricity to name but a few
